The Purpose of a Headshot

Headshots are more than just a quick photo:

The purpose of a Headshot. Headshots are photos that are meant for branding of a company or person, it is therefore far more important to have certain technical aspects correct.

The meaning:

Psychology also plays a big part in this type of photography. As this is the message that the image gives to the client, before they have met you in person.

For example, a profile photo of you drinking with a friend gives the subliminal message that you may drink too much. Making you look less reliable.

Having a person that is unfamiliar with different lighting aspects can also leave a bad impression. As shadows that may be too harsh might come off as sinister.

The headshot is meant to be a first impression image. It need to give a story, value and impression to a viewer, before meeting them. This is why the headshot is the new handshake.

It is therefore important to have a photograph that resembles what you want to say about yourself. Whether you are looking for a nice and clean image or if you need an environmental portrait rather. This is something that should be thought of for the platform you want to use your image.

Though Steven is a friendly guy, this image was taken with a bit more mood, to give a feeling of more powerful and in control. The next image is one that is more friendly, approachable.

A slight change in the angle the outdoor shoot is from gives a lighter background and helps to lift the mood.

These are just a few of the pieces that one needs to look at when shooting, especially with outdoor headshots that do not have a studio background.

The Equipment:

Then there is also the equipment that one would need to use to ensure a higher quality of image. The most important pieces being a decent camera DLSR or Mirrorless. High quality lens. Lighting and reflectors.

All of these items can also impact the mood or feel, from lighting techniques to create more shadows for drama or more lit up for a lighter feel. Lenses that give different background effects from making a background less visible to including an environment where needed.

This is why it is important for a headshot photograph, to be done by a professional. One that has trained with not only a camera, but lighting, mood and personality among all the other concepts one needs to learn.
